ABOUT OUR INTERVENTIONS:  "BEHIND THE SCENES"

The idea of "intervention" has become well-known in pop culture, since the A&E television show of the same name introduced it into mainstream consciousness.  However, successful intervention requires intricate design and synchronized application of a series of complex and highly-customized strategies.

In fact, scientists studying nicotine cessation have consistently documented a phenomenon with which substance abuse coaches have long been familiar:  The prognosis for recovery from addiction increases exponentially, as additional points of intervention are implemented.

So, what does this mean, exactly?  Well, smokers who employ not one, but two cessation methods - (1) the "patch" and (2) a support group, for instance - show a substantially greater statistical rate of sustained reform, than someone who tried either one cessation aid or the other.  Furthermore, when you add three, four and five cessation aids (or "points of intervention"), each tends to compound the effect of the other, quite literally multiplying the smoker's overall chance of becoming and remaining a non-smoker!

So, when ARCS coaches show up "on the scene" to craft a customized intervention, they bring with them a host of resources that are then woven into a personalized and multifaceted action plan.  Then, there is also a great deal of family orientation and education in order.  First, we assess each family member's role, in relation to the addict.  Then, we must also take into account each family member's specific needs.  Just as intervening upon a domestic abuser involves working with the victim, rather than the perpetrator, so intervening upon a substance abuser involves  planning with the family, rather than the addict.  And, training family members for such an endeavor is much like conducting a symphony, wherein every person has their particular gift and contribution, which complements the greater composition of motivating the addict to seek comprehensive help.

Not long ago, personalized intervention was available only to families possessing substantial socio-economic resources.  In fact, an on-site intervention tends to start at approximately $7,000, including travel, accommodations, assessment and coaching of the family, and development and implementation of a multidimensional intervention plan.  Now, with online technology, we can develop customized intervention strategies and teach families to carry them out effectively, at a fraction of the cost of any on-site intervention protocol.

Just as with any television or film production, making something refined takes a lot of work behind the scenes!  We can work with your family to motivate the addict toward help.
